A lucky fellow from the village of Bagnone in Tuscany, Italy called Ugo Verni is the winner of Europe's biggest ever lottery prize (€147 million) on the Superenalotto in Italy which has been rolling over for months now.
The top prize was a staggering €147 million (around £130 million) and was won off a winning ticket that was sold in a bar in the medieval village of Bagnone. The exact amount? A cool €147,807,299.
The winner had spent just €2 on buying tickets before landing the huge payout a return of over 7 billion per cent on his investment.
The owner of the bar, Vanni Simonetti, claims the winner had telephoned him to thank him for selling him the golden ticket. "His voice was unmistakable," he said. "Even though he tried to remain anonymous, I know who he is."
Mr Verni is single, in his late forties and lives in a modest house. He´s bricklayer and a worker in a forestry co-op. He is denying the rumours with a big grin on his face. Well, you would, wouldn´t you otherwise it´d be permanently "your round" at the bar.
The jackpot had rolled over 87 times and built into the world's 2nd-largest, after Mega Millions in the USA in March 2007.
Lottery World Records..Did you know?!
- The European lottery record before this one was £110 million - and was set in Spain in May 2009 when a 25-year-old woman won the Euro Millions jackpot.
- The biggest UK National Lottery jackpot win was £42 million, which was shared by 3 punters in January 1996.
- The richest British winner of a Euro Millions draw was Angela Kelly, of East Kilbride, who landed £35.4 million in 2007. An Irish lady, Dolores McNamara of Limerick, scooped £70million in 2005.
- On March 6, 2007, a MegaMillions jackpot in the United States of America which had accumulated to £235 million was shared by 2 lucky winners fromGeorgia and New Jersey. This is the all time record for a lottery win, but given the publicity that huge wins like this generate, don´t be suprised if they keep going up.
