The company behind one of Indiana's best known riverboat casinos in the US are about to update it with a new $335 million casino cruiser that's the size of two football pitches.
The new Hollywood casino is replacing the Argosy casino on June 29. It will have a 150,000-square-foot gaming floor and is a couple of miles from the bridge tha connects Indiana and the Kentucky suburbs south of Cincinnati. It has been under construction for 2 years. The floating casino is themed on '30s Hollywood and will have live shows and a massive cinema to screen live sports and movie trailers.
One of the Internet's longest established casinos, the Riverbelle Casino, is themed on these huge floating gaming boats. They are famous for their atmosphere and "Southern Hospitality".
Owner Penn National has installed over 3,000 slot machines and 1,000 blackjack and poker tables. They have increased the existing offering by around 1,000 gaming spots.
Penn has also just signed a deal to host to a World Poker Tour each year.
"You could put this boat on the strip in Las Vegas or next to The Grand Lisboa in Macau and it would fit right in," a spokesman said.
The boat's nearest floating casino competition are the Grand Victoria at Rising Sun and Belterra in Switzerland County about 40 miles away. They are small craft by comparison and take less revenue.
Argosy pulled $36.3 million a month last year, which stacks up favorably with Belterra's $13.4 million and Grand Victoria's $11.1 million.
The majority of Argosy's players are from nearby Kentucky and Ohio counties. The new boat can comfortably fit more than 9,000 visitors and employees.
The new riverboat casino should inflate gross revenue to between $60 million and $80 million in the first year of operation.
